In early 2010, Soul Cannon began spending late nights in their West Baltimore studio space working on a new album. In lieu of the live instrumentation that Soul Cannon's debut album Kaboom was highly praised for, the band wrote, recorded, and mixed The Mixed Ape on one computer, using no live instruments at all. Combining tried and true approaches to hip hop production along with very interesting new compositional techniques, Soul Cannon's 2nd album opens new doors into the world of Hip Hop. Sampling a wild array of sounds, from their own instruments to avant-garde string quartets and classic video game noises, the album paints new realms of sound. Although traditional electronic instruments including sequencers, synthesizers and samplers were all used, the end result is not what you've come to expect in a time of relentless musical repetition. Instead, the Mixed Ape is conceived from a different musical perspective–without regard to genre, using unique strategies for theme and variation and introducing many refreshing approaches to music making.
